PostSubject: Army Tiers   Mon Sep 27, 2010 2:39 pm

So far there have been a bunch of discussions on this.

Who thinks what armies belong in what tiers.

I think that the top armies are as follows.

Daemons of Chaos
High Elves
Empire
Dwarves

Orcs (possibly but rumors of new army book coming soon)

All the other armies don't matter I am just listing what I think top tier armies are.

I think all the others basically fall into the same category.

Here are my reasons summed up as quick as I can for each army.

Daemons:

Core units are crazy good. Basically like having an Undead army that is way better at everything.

Flammeres and Flesh hounds enough about those units.

Special Characters Break the game, Karios, Mask.

Their Magic Banners, -2 LD, and Stubborn banners are crazy good.

High Elves:

ASF for everything!!!

Teclis (need I say more)

Spearmen are super legit, archers not to shabby.
Phonix Guard Almost Impossible to Kill.
White Lions Nasty.

Also, BSB that makes a unit Immune to magic wow!!!

Empire:

Ability to always have more dispel dice then you have power dice with Arch Lectors and Priests. Really Really good.

Can take any of the lores of magic and abuse them easily, by taking cheap wizards.

Engineers within 3 inchs of machine reroll artillery. Almost makes a dwarf engineer obsolete.

Steam Tanks, Morters, Great Cannons, Helbasters, and Hellstorms!!!

Not to mention big blocks of Flaggelents and Halberds are not bad.

Dwarves:

Thorak (everyone knows why hes good)

War machines that are magical and flaming WTF?

Bolt throwers for cheap and lots of them yikes! Surprised I did not see the 12 bolt thrower 6 cannon list at ard boys.

T4 and better for the whole army good stuff, great armor, good fighting ability.

Crazy good banner combo's and best of all their ability to dispel everything they want.

Finally the Orcs:

Ability to take lots and lots of warmachines that are actually great, and still have tons of room for troops that hit hard, and so much crazy good magic.

at 2500 points you can take 6 bolt thowers 3 rock lobbers, 2 doom divers, 4 snotling pump wagons, and still take another 4 chariots.

And that is not even half of the points to spend on your army. Wow.

Also their miscast table is not bad, so risking a dude every turn on rolling 6 dice does not matter.

Also 35 and 65 point casters is crazy stupid because you can get all the spells you need and when you want to blow up a guy to change the game and get a crazy good spell off you don't care.

Finally the dispel dice banner. That is great. Getting all those extra dispel dice pretty much keeps your army safe from magic.

So there you guys have it. Those are my pics.

There are lots more reasons for each army being in the tier they are in.

But I wanted to keep it kindof short. Even though its still pretty long. afro

Lizards are toptier. Especially Life Slann. That's what won the Crossroads GT. Dark elves, definitely still top tier. They didn't get hurt in 8th only helped. Daemons still good. Empire. Orcs went up a few notches.

Daemons are number 1 end of story nothing is better if there are no rules.

Once you say no named characters lizards and dark elves become really good.

I thought Lizards at least were on par with Demons now.

Top tier was roughing out to be skaven, demons, lizards and dark elves.

Skaven are not top tier.

They are a strong army, but not top tier.

Dark Elves are good, and so are lizards, but they are not top tier armies.

When you can only have one or two builds to your list they are not top tier.

Lizards only have one list, and if you can shut that lists magic down its a game over for them, even if they just roll average they won't win with the casting army that it is.

Even though that list one a GT its still all about match ups. So you can't say because one tournament was won with a lizard list that it is top tier yet.

At ard boys almost everyone is either playing

High elves, Daemons, WOC, or Empire, Dwarves, and I saw a few orcs and goblins. That is generally a good sign of what armies are top tier or not. Still get a mix of the other armies but those are the biggest ones.

Dark elves are good, but still weak T3 kills them. And still only one build for them, and that is relying on the hydra banner, a cauldron, and a big block of executioners and hydras. Not saying they are not a strong army. But they are not top tier.

And I didn't forget to put skaven on the list, but I ran out you can only poll 10 things, so I just listed those 10 thats all.

Dude only in the rear occasion of named characters can you put daemons at top tier. When you remove named characters from the game everything changes. Lizards become boss. dark elves and woc. Orcs and goblins and pretty much anything with power scroll too.

Try to remember there are allot more tournaments out there that say no names characters.

So look at it from that point of view.

Even without named characters Daemons are still top tier.

You get flammers, and flesh hounds.

You can still make a LD bomb Army which is stupid good.

-3 LD casted at people over and over again, with a -2 LD banner, and all your guys only get hit if you can past a LD test, and if you cast the spell that makes them take the test on 3 dice and toss out the lowest your army pretty much can't be hurt.

And that does not have a single named person in it.

Not to mention everything in the entire army still has ward saves.

You can still take a double headed turkey that is almost exactly like karios, re-roll a dicer per turn.

Chose a lore and he knows all the spells, or just keep him tzeentch.

You don't have to have special chars to make a ard boys winning daemon list.

And I realize that there are tournaments without named guys, but not the big ones, most GT's and the big Vegas GT allow you to take them. So if the discussion is what is the strongest army out there, then you can't bring random other tournaments into the discussion.

What is the strongest army no restrictions

I think we will end up seeing lots of Daemons and High elves at the Vegas GT is pretty much all I am getting pre-parred for.

I might have to disagree that demons are the be all end all still. Argueably it's still too damn early to begin doing a tier break down for 8th edition. In addition, I'd argue that lizards and dark elves only have one build that's competitive HOWEVER yall have much more tournament experience then I do. I like my beasts but I realize they aren't going to be a hardcore army. I'd like to see a new Army Book for 8th edition but hey who the F! knows when we'll get one of those what with 2 40k books due out in the next 4 months.

I still want to see if a Monster Mash Lizards army can hang.
