So does anyone here play Flames of War or have experience with Flames of War.

I wondered around G&S looking for something to buy and it was FoW or Warmachine. FoW won out. I picked up the starter box so I only have 3 shermans and 2 StuG. I have ordered the North Afrika book. I was just wondering if we had some people playing something not made by GW.

A lot of people are learning/starting Warmachine, Flames of War not so much. That being said, G&S is one of the east coasts largest retailers for Flames of War, so if there's a community anywhere it's there, I'm just not sure which days they meet.

I'm with Scooter. I'm very interested in FoW but have not had the money/time to sink into learning a new system and buying models. Too many other projects going on right now.

That being said I have the same starter set and Fortress Europe. Was planning on doing Germans.

Yeah, I was told FoW is a Monday thing at G&S.

It looks interesting. The mini-role book I have is like 250 pages. Lots to read. Kinda neat you use your opponents skill (not yours )on seeing if you can shoot them.

One problem is that I think you can really only play people from the same time period (Early, Middle, Late). I guess it is the best way to try and balance everything. Just makes it a bit more expensive. Luckily they only have M and L out atm.

I was planning on playing Germans, to bad apparently they are by far the most popular. I ordered my North Afrika book, since I have always had a fondness for the Afrika Korp and Rommel. That would put me at running M. I guess I could always look at good ol' Monty and his Brits.

I would have bought Warmachine, but to be honest I didn't know what the starter book looked like. I think I need a break from SciFi/Fantasy.

Flames of War is a very good system. It's got a very good balance between game play and history. It doesn't bog down like a lot of historical games can. (If you've ever spent two hours while two guys argue over how fast a russian tank can turn around, you know what I mean.)

The midwar/late war divide is mainly in the points you pay for things. A tiger is a tiger. Use it in late war at 215 pts, or in midwar at 385. It's much more devastating in midwar, so it costs more.

US carries over very well mid to late. Germans less so, as they had so many upgrades continuously coming out, and a lot of the desert units were leftovers from other wars, or variations on what was available to them. Mid-war, especially Afrika, is probably my favorite time period.

I've got a few thousand points of US, 2000 in Afrika Germans, 4000 in late war Germans, and a bunch of russsians that I seem to have inherited/bought from 3 different people and need to figure out what I'm doing with them.)

We've got a 1750 Late War tournament coming up May 1st and 2nd. I won't be able to play in it, (possibly as a ringer if we have an odd number), but I'm looking forward to a ton of practice games with the guys who will be.

Tim (ThatTauGuy) was talking about doing Russian, when he cleared out some room. If you are looking for a good (cheap =) home for them we might be able to find a place for them.

FoW system seems good. You can play two Armies of the same era regardless of faction. i.e Russians vs. Brits.

The only historic stuff I have really seen played was Napoleonic. I have wondered about how turning works. So I wonder if I will be drug out the back and flogged if I try to use desert painted tanks in an army list that is supposedly fighting the Russians in winter Smile

I did notice they have a North Afrika set. I am not sure how good it is, but it is about 1500 points for $215 from Battlefront, might be cheaper from G&S I don't know.
