I just ordered my first batch of magnets. I'm wondering what I kind of metal should I use to sink them against, and what's the easiest form/way to get it in?

Using small magnets (1/16" x 1/32" discs), I place a magnet on both sides of the bond.

With a matching size drill bit, you can get a nice flush exact size matching hole really easily on plastic.

I've found drilling deeper a slotting two magnets on a heavier piece a good approach, which I just did on a heavy Myrmidon kit....for the Pheonix back pieces.

I can show you how I magnetized some landspeeders at our game tonight. I use the magnet to magnet method with 1/8 x 1/32 and 1/16 x 1/32 magnets depending what I'm trying to connect.

There is something great about having 2 modular Predators with easy sponson weapon swaps. And it can convert to a Rhino/Razorback by popping off the magnetized side doors.

Magnet to magnet is definitely the best way to go. Gives you a good strong bond. Just be sure that your polarity is consistent. Those small rare earth magnets can have a good strong hold. I made my brothers Dreadknight fully modular by magnetizing the shooting and close combat weapons. Takes time, but is worth it in the end.

I have also recently been using 1 magnet and a piece of paperclip for really small swaps. It is not nearly as strong, but can be good for some things.

Next time we get a game in or you see me with my army just inquire. I can show you some "what not to do" examples from when I first started using magnets. Only 3 models in my Deathwing are without magnets, so I have a good variety of examples.

Thin sheet steel is good too. 28 Guage, you can cut with shears.
Also bendable and polarity isn't an issue.

I have an order of magnets on the way, so all the advice is greatly appreciated.

@ Tim - The etched Brass worked BEAUTIFULLY. I'm thinking one will be Raven Guard, the other will be a Hawk Lord.

Glad to hear. Can't wait to see what it looks like so I can attempt it when I get back to my Raven Guard.
